FOP is one of the rarest, most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine. It causes bone to form in muscles, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues. In people with FOP, bridges of extra bone develop across joints, progressively restricting movement and forming a second skeleton that imprisons them in bone. There are no other known examples in medicine of one normal organ system turning into another.
In 2020, your support allowed the IFOPA to fund 4 new ACT for FOP drug development grants and the first-ever gene therapy research grant in FOP. ACT for FOP grants have expanded the reach of FOP research around the world further propelling FOP drug development. Because of you, exciting progress is already being made in gene therapy research at the University of Massachusetts and they are eager to start the next phase of their work - and so are we!
In Pursuit of a Cure - Investing in Progress. Believing in Hope. will help fund new ACT for FOP drug development grants and phase 2 of gene therapy research at UMASS. Please join us as we continue to grow FOP research and move forward on the path toward treatments and a cure. Your support in any amount will help us start off strong. And the first $50,000 in donations will be matched dollar for dollar.
The development of gene therapies is a long road. The process from early stage research to regulatory approval can take a decade or more. But if successful, gene therapy has the potential to cure treated cells and prevent the development of FOP bone. We believe that we simply must pursue every avenue of research and leave no stone unturned for our FOP family. We can search for treatments and a cure together!
